We are launching the TETRIS seminar with this session : “Strategic Narratives and Their Reception: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Wartime Russia's Messaging in India and South Africa”. This session explores the reception of strategic narratives, using Russia's messaging in the BRICS countries as a case study. More specifically, it discusses the methods used in the UKRI-funded research project “War and Order”. This project examines the dissemination and reception of Russian strategic narratives on the war in Ukraine and the transitional international order in countries of the so-called “Global South”, with a particular focus on India and South Africa. Combining natural language processing, qualitative narrative analysis, and survey experimentation, the project's three investigators will trace the research process from identifying Russian strategic narratives in official and media communications to testing their effects on Indian and South African audiences. Particular attention is paid to the comparative impact of generic versus audience-tailored narratives and to the methodological challenges of measuring narrative influence across different sociopolitical contexts. The session highlights the value of mixed-methods designs for linking narrative production, adaptation, and reception.
